Urethane Flooring

Resinous Flooring Resistant to Thermal Shock and Cycling

Urethane flooring systems (also known as polyurethane flooring systems) resurface concrete floors and add color to designate walkways or other markings. They are able to provide a number of performance functions such as slip resistance, chemical resistance, and abrasion resistance. Urethane floors are also used to provide waterproofing and pitch for water drainage and are seamless solutions for hygienic protection. From an aesthetic standpoint, urethane floors can add decorative finishes and designs to both commercial and industrial spaces, with unlimited color options. Urethane floors are sought after for the protection they offer against thermal shock and thermal cycling. Continue reading to learn more specific information about the benefits of urethane flooring as well as the environment to which they are applicable.

LEARN ABOUT BENEFITS OF URETHANE FLOORING
  • THERMAL SHOCK AND THERMAL CYCLING RESISTANCE

Public areas and showrooms can achieve their desired appearance while enjoying the strong and durable qualities of epoxy.

  • ANTIMICROBIAL PROTECTION

Urethane floors can provide anti-microbial properties to help block the growth of microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi, and molds. Seamless, poured-in-place urethane floors are naturally bacteriostatic and fungistatic because there are no seams, welds, or grout lines where bacteria can harbor and potentially grow. This seamless structure also makes the floor easier to clean, which supports anti-microbial efforts.

    See our recommended Anti-Microbial Flooring.

  • MOISTURE RESISTANCE

Urethane flooring is water resistant in that it is able to resist the penetration of water to some degree. Water-resistant urethane floors have properties that protect against water, but these floors are not waterproof (meaning impervious to water). Urethane floors will likely survive an encounter with water, but it will depend on the amount of water and how often the contact occurs.

  • SUSTAINABILITY

Floors can be considered eco-friendly based on the disposal of the materials upon replacement. Unlike many other flooring products, poured-in-place urethane floors are part of a building's structure and do not end up in landfills upon repair or replacement. Urethane flooring may also utilize rapidly renewable agro-based materials as well as recycled materials within their formulation.

  • LOW VOC FORMULA

Urethane floors are available in low VOC options to improve indoor air quality during installation.

See our recommended for Low-VOC Flooring.

  • SLIP RESISTANCE

Slip-resistant flooring is designed with material properties to help reduce slipperiness and increase traction. Necessary for the protection of employees, customers, and visitors in both industrial and commercial facilities, slip-resistant floors come in a variety of finishes and textures specifically designed to reduce slippage on the flooring surface.

  • URETHANE FLOORING APPLICATIONS

    Commercial Flooring

Hospitality - If you operate a hotel, restaurant, night club, or similar establishment, you know flooring selection matters. Seamless, stain and slip-resistant floors provide safety and long-lasting durability for front-of-the-house lobbies and restaurants; back-of-the-house commercial kitchens and mechanical rooms; and even outdoor applications like walkways, patios, and rooftop bars. Commercial urethane flooring offers a wide-range of color options and patterns for cafes, cafeterias, restaurants, fitness centers and more, while providing heavy-duty protection against thermal shock and cycling where floors are subject to hot water washdowns or high-temperature spills from kettles and other kitchen equipment. Urethane floors also withstand cleaning chemicals and organic acids.

Transportation - Seamless urethane floors for airports, train stations, and bus terminals offer slip, stain, and impact resistance as well as easy maintenance. Commercial urethane floors stand up to all kinds of traffic, wheeled or foot, and offer a wide range of design options and long-lasting formulations.

Education - Colleges and schools have many flooring requirements and must strike a balance between performance and design. With plenty of foot traffic from staff, faculty, and students, commercial urethane flooring is a smart option for facilities looking to achieve long-lasting, wear-resistant surfaces. Urethane floors also come in a variety of colors and patterns, with the ability to include custom logos. In addition, schools can benefit from noise reduction and comfort underfoot with these poured-in-place flooring systems. Urethane flooring is also ideal in areas like the cafeteria kitchen where it can provide protection from organic acids, chemical attack, and thermal shock and cycling.

Retail - Retail locations have unique flooring requirements which demand a balance of design and functionality. Grocery stores, department stores, convenience stores, and other retail facilities require floors that create a welcoming environment while standing up to heavy traffic, spills, impact, and continuous cleaning. Commercial urethane floors offer a variety of design options and can provide resilience for comfort underfoot and noise reduction. Urethane flooring systems can be used in back-of-house spaces like bakeries, coolers, food preparation areas, and kitchen for protection against organic acids, cleaning formulas, and spills. They can also provide extraordinary design options in front customer-facing spaces.

    Industrial Flooring

Food & Beverage - Food and beverage manufacturers have unique challenges when it comes to floors. They can experience moisture, temperature extremes, chemical intensive cleaning, and traffic from carts, crates, forklifts and more. With inspections to pass, including USDAFDA, and OSHA, seamless, sanitary, easy-to-clean industrial urethane floors are the best option to meet requirements. HACCP-certified urethane flooring solutions have been verified as food safe and are ideal for bakeries, packaging plants, freezers & refrigeration, bottling areas, loading docks, and much more. Sanitary design should also include floors pitched to hygenic drains and ultra-durable wall protection.

Pharmaceutical - Pharmaceutical areas such as processing, packaging, research labs, vivariums, washdown areas, tableting and more require high-performance urethane floors. Industrial urethane floors offer chemical, impact and abrasion resistance while meeting high design standards at the same time.

Aerospace - Areas in Aerospace facilities like assembly lines, aircraft test cells, battery rooms, laboratories benefit from seamless, industrial urethane floors. While these flooring systems provide wear, abrasion, and chemical-resistance, they also offer antimicrobial protection, stain resistance, moisture resistance, and protection against thermal shock and cycling.

General Manufacturing - When you require pure performance, we have the floors that deliver. Our seamless, impact, chemical, abrasion-resistant floors do the work of ten floors for manufacturing environments whether they're processing, packaging, warehouses, traffic aisles, battery storage or others. URETHANE FLOOR INSTALLATION PROCESS
Our Process:

Stonhard is responsible for manufacturing and installing the materials to provide a finished floor. The details are important for a successful urethane floor installation.

Inspection and Testing

The area is inspected prior to installation to determine the right system required for the area and what testing is required. Based on the condition of the slab, use of the space, or age of the building, different tests may be required, such as Calcium Chloride or Relative Humidity testing to determine the moisture content of the slab or contamination.

Substrate Preparation

Based on the information found from these tests and onsite visits, the proper preparation procedure is determined. This may include mechanical preparation with media blasting, diamond grinding, and removal by jack hammers and chipping guns. If slabs are determined to be contaminated with oils, de-greasing may be necessary to achieve proper adhesion. Preparation is the most important process to ensure there is a proper bond to the substrate.

Application

Installation of the system will vary depending on the specific system (broadcast, mortar, self leveler). The common installation procedures vary from screeding and troweling the material, squeegeeing and rolling the material, and broadcasting the material. All details, including waterproofing, cove base, penetrations, drains, etc., are discussed prior to installation. These will be handled properly to ensure a good quality urethane floor installation with professionally trained installation teams.
